According to the Oxford Dictionary Chinoiserie is “the imitation or evocation of Chinese motifs and techniques in Western art, furniture, and architecture; especially in the 18th century”. Chinoisere designs in a home were popular because it gave the homeowner the appearance of having money to travel abroad and bring treasures back from what they would’ve called “the exotic Orient”.
