If you’re planning to go hiking this summer you may be wondering what to wear. Questions like where do I get hiking clothes, what shoes do I wear, and do I need a backpack, probably sound familiar to you. If you are new to hiking, or it’s been a long time since you’ve hiked you are in the right place! Let’s chat summer hiking outfits!
I’m a flatlander, a.k.a. a Floridian. But, I love a summer trip to the mountains and I love hiking! I’ve been spending summer vacations in North Carolina since I was child. Over the years and a lot of (easy) hikes I’ve developed a pretty good sense of what I like to wear hiking. So, here’s my take on summer hiking outfits.
The first thing to know is that you will need to layer. Summer mountain mornings are usually cool, then warming to hot afternoons. Bring a flannel, zip up jacket, or pull over. Nothing too heavy, and something that you can tie around your waist. You want to avoid having to carry anything.
Bag or backpack? Do you need a backpack or bag? The answer depends on the length of the hike. A long hike will need water, snacks, and even lunch; so you would obviously need a backpack. But, for a short casual hike you probably don’t need a bag. Leggings with pockets are great to store your phone and keys. You can also carry a small crossbody bag. If you really want to bring a bottle of water, bring a small re-usable water bottle and a small backpack. Don’t overload yourself. You really don’t need much on a short casual hike and discovering you have more stuff than you need in the middle of the hike is annoying.
For shoes, I wear dark tennis shoes or hiking boots. If I’m being honest I really just prefer tennis shoes. When I was younger I wore hiking boots and had to have the “trendy” ones, but now I find that tennis shoes work just as well. Just, don’t wear new or light colored ones- they will get ruined. If you are hiking to a waterfall or swimming hole, wear Tevas or Chacos on your hike. They are super comfy and designed to get wet and be worn in mountain creeks/ swimming holes.
For the base layer I recommend a pair of leggings with pockets. Long or short, doesn’t really matter- preference and temperature can help you make that decision. On top I like to wear a tank top or t-shirt that is somewhat tight fitting. I like my shirt to be fitted because I will know I will be wearing a jacket or flannel on top. A baggy or loose shirt is so annoying when trying to layer a jacket over it. If you are going on a swimming hike wear a one piece bathing suit with shorts or leggings over it as your bottom.
That’s it! Remember, these are recommendations for a casual, family friendly hike! Remember- laying is a must, less is more, and comfort is key!
